Aztecs Announce Coaching Roster Ahead of 2018 Campaign

The Bristol Aztecs are proud to announce their Coaching Staff and Backroom team ahead of their 2018 BAFANL Premiership Season. There are a number of new faces as well as some familiar ones from recent years.

Head Coach
Chris Powles

Coach Powles has been with the Aztecs since 1992. He took the reigns as Head Coach in 2011. Coach Powles was Defensive Coordinator of FBU Europe for 2 years and spent time at SMU University in Texas.


Defensive Coordinator
James Wilford

Coach James joined the Aztecs in summer 2015 as Defensive Line coach and following the end of the season he took up the position as DC. Coach Wilford is also with the Gloucestershire Gladiators, where he’s been Head Coach since July 2015. Coach of the year nominee.

Defensive Line Coach
Steve Davey

Coach Steve Davey spent 14 years with the Aztecs as a player as well as 2 seasons in New Zealand, Spain and Finland. Coach Davey has coached youth football overseas as well as spending time with the UWE Bullets, Bristol Barracuda on both offensive and defensive lines. Coach Steve will be coaching the Defensive Line.

Linebacker Coach
James Speck

Last season Coach Speck joined the Aztecs, as Linebackers Coach a role that he will hold for the 2018 season. James is also the defensive coordinator of the Gloucestershire Gladiators and a former player for the Bristol Apache.

Defensive Back Coach
Kevin Lupton

Ken was an original member of the Bristol Aztecs playing various positions on both sides of the ball culminating in 1997 as Division Two Champions at Quarterback. Coach Kev has moved across to the defensive side of the ball where he will be working with the Defensive Backs.


Offensive Coordinator
Pete Jones

Our next Coach is Offensive Coordinator Pete Jones. Coach Pete began his Aztec career in 2002 and Between 02 and 2012 he played all 3 interior spots on the OL and represented the GB lions from 2003-2008 going to 2 European championships. Pete has been Aztecs OC since 2015 after 2 years as Apache HC. He is also Club Chairman.

Special Teams Coordinator
Paul Dangerfield

He began coaching the Aztecs youth team in 2007, and was Head Coach in 2010 for the national championship winning squad. Coach Paul started coaching seniors in 2013 as Running Backs Coach and Special Teams Coordinator. Coach Paul continues in the role of Special Teams Coordinator.

Wide Receivers and Quarterbacks Coach
Ben Herod

Coach Ben is the Head Coach of Bristol Academy PRIDE, the most successful youth program in Britain. Ben has also coached with FBU Europe and is another former player for the Aztecs.

Offensive Line Coach
Gary Gardner

Coach Gary joined the Aztecs in 2003 and has played for both the Aztecs and Apache on the offensive line. Gary also works with THE PRIDE – Filton College American Football Academy coaching Offensive and Defensive lines and is another new addition to the staff.

Running Backs Coach
Joseph Joncas

Coach Joe is from Ontario in Canada and following a 12 year playing career, has been coaching for the last 11. His primary focus has been on the offensive side of the ball and also working with the Special Teams. Coach Joe is another new recruit to the Aztecs Coaching staff for the 2018 season and will be coaching Running Backs.

Nick 'Willy Tee' Wilson-Town hails from the South West where he's spent the last decade bouncing around various teams at the university and senior level.
