We have the first London vs London fixture of the season in the Premier South, whilst Tamworth travel North hoping to continue their barnstorming start to the campaign.
Edinburgh Wolves vs Tamworth Phoenix
The Wolves can’t catch a break. After losing to the Pirates, a game that they could and should have put away, the Wolves welcome Tamworth north of the wall. This will no doubt be the toughest game for the wolves and another stepping stone for ‘Nix.
Both teams have a lot of fire power, however the Wolves showed how a lack of experience in the big leagues can cost a team. Tamworth walked away with a comfortable win on the weekend. They were never really tested by the Wolverines. Deji and Sam Lori-Skinn scored on their debut, and were joined by regular contributors on offense in Elliot Walters, James Hossack and Marcus Boswell. ‘Nix defense did extremely well, shutting out Lancashire. Even with Jake Harbon out with an injury, Andy Mortimer and Ben Davies held strong in the middle.
The Wolves came out unlucky in their last clash. They took an early lead which they then proceeded to give away. The showed once again how talented their side is, with the QB Jamie Morrison showing he has the capability to put points up consistently. However, they just were not able to hold out for all four quarters. For the wolves to really have an impact the coaching staff will need to work on keeping the team on the same page and competitive for all four quarters.
This game is another easy one to predict. Although the wolves could possibly compete with the ‘Nix it is very unlikely they will be able to halt the juggernaut. ‘Nix will rock up, play their game and leave. ‘Nix to win
Merseyside Nighthawks vs Lancashire Wolverines
The Nighthawks kicked off their season with a strong showing against the Giants. Merseyside can go into the game with confidence having a solid win under their belts and knowing that their opponents have recently received a good drilling by the ‘Nix.
In a back and forth encounter, WR Alex Eager stepped up to the plate and help carry the ‘Hawks to victory. Along with the talent they have on defense, players such as DL Matt O’Connell should make easy work of the Wolverines offense.
The Wolverines coaching staff will have their work cut out for them as they try and bring the team back into a positive mentality after the ‘Nix loss.
Overall the game will serve to be an indication of which team is at the bottom of the barrel in the Premier North. With Sheffield showing sparks of brilliance but yet to clinch a victory, Lancashire will need to show that they can produce to avoid the drop this season. Smart money is on the ‘Hawks to build on their momentum, and everyone knows that I’m relatively smart.
London Blitz vs London Warriors
This is the first of our ‘big rivalry’ games in the Prem South, London vs London, the Champions vs the Runners Up.. the game that could decide who is the leader of the conference.
After the Warriors loss in the NEFL at the weekend they will be aiming to come back to the UK wanting to remind everyone of their strength. What better game to do that than the currently placed 2nd team in the division. Having already scored a massive 84 points off two games the Warriors sit pretty at the top and look like they can’t be stopped. The Warriors will have prepared strongly for this match up, being one of the most important games so far this season. They will be bringing out their toughest side and doing what they can to get the win.
The Blitz need to win this one if they wish to see their trophy hopes kept alight this year, with the Warriors seeming to be their main competition after their win at the Aztecs two weeks ago.
After Bury put 27 points on the Warriors in week one yet only managed 7 points against the Blitz this weekend could be an extremely close game if the Blitz defense can dominate on the field. This will be a great game. I’m gonna go with Blitz to win as it’d make this conference really interesting.
Bury Saints vs Farnham Knights
The Saints come into this game on the back of their difficult loss to the Blitz. HC Christian Cantrill said that it wasn’t the results that the team had worked towards or wanted, but they will learn from it, get better and move on.
He said ‘The Blitz showed their championship pedigree capitalising on our mistakes and are a very well coached team that just outplayed us in the end.’ The team did well to get a score on the well drilled Blitz squad and as they head into the game against the Knights should have some hope of getting a few more scores on the bored. Coach Cantrill has said ‘the Knights are a very good team that historically prides itself on running the ball, that can be dangerous through the air and is exceptional on defense. They also have some great coaches down there who will have their team prepared for the travel north. This will be yet another stern test for us and we are looking forward to it.’
The Knights are currently 0-2 after playing two tough sides in their first two games and will be keen to get some more points scored against the Saints this weekend.
The Warriors scored 57 points on Bury but only 27 points on the Knights so this weekend should show whether this was down to the Warriors team on the day or the Knights strong defence. Either way the Knights could push themselves off the bottom of the table if they can get the win this weekend against Bury. All of that said, I’m going with Bury for this one.
