Ahead of this weekend’s BAFCA Convention, The British American Football Coaches Association have announced five appointments to newly created roles, as outlined in the BAFCA AGM and Director Reports documents published last week.
These first appointments are:
- Women’s Development Officer – Phoebe Schecter
- Flag Development Officer – Kenny Bello
- North Coaches Relationship Coordinator – Dale Bottomley
- Central Coaches Relationship Coordinator – Rob Urquhart
- South Coaches Relationship Coordinator – Mike Kiddell
The appointments fill five of the seven new ‘Officer’ roles created by the BAFCA Board, the Association’s first steps in a restructure that looks to follow along similar lines to last year’s BAFA leadership restructure, and is aimed at seeing a significant expansion of the BAFCA leadership through the creation of teams, each lead by a BAFCA director.
The coaching association are certainly pulling no punches in these appointments, as each appointee is a well-known name in British American Football… and beyond!
Coach Schecter is fast becoming one of the best-known faces of British Football, having spent time in recent seasons coaching with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, as well as being an accomplished multi-sport international athlete who’ll lead the GB Lions out onto the field at the IFAF Euros later this summer.
Kenny Bello, along with being a founder of the amazing UK Dukes, is a longtime staple of the GB Lions Flag roster that will travel to Israel later this summer, while also working to introduce more and more school children to Football through the founding of his own company, Ignite American Football, who work directly with NFL UK to bring Flag foot into schools.
Meanwhile, Coaches Bottomley, Urquhart and Kiddell are well-respected coaches from their respective regions – Coach Bottomley heading up the Yorkshire Academy of American Football, Coach Urquhart, whose recent appointments include Defensive Coordinator for the Prem North’s Leicester Falcons, HC of their new U19s roster, and Linebackers Coach for the GB Lions U19s under Head Coach Jason Henry, and Coach Kiddell of the Portsmouth Dreadnoughts and Destroyers.
The goal is to ensure BAFCA can continue making progress in the development of Coaching in the UK, by spreading the ever-increasing workload of the rapidly growing association across a larger number of passionate and committed Coaches. Further, the Regional Coordination roles will allow the board to better liaise with an ever-expanding membership that has peaked over 2,000 members in 2019.
Two roles still awaiting appointment are the Curriculum Pathway & CPD Officer, which will join Coaches Schecter and Bello as part of the Education Team, the Policy & Procedures Officer, who will work with the Director of Admin & Compliance, and the Safeguarding & Welfare Offcier, who will work under the Vice President of the association alongside a Rules and Ethics Committee leads.
The BAFCA 2019 Convention gets underway this weekend and tickets are still available, free to BAFCA members or from just £10 a day to those already involved in Britball, available on Event Brite.
