Birmingham Lions Women headed to Europe – Inaugural Diamond Bowl

The Birmingham Lions continue to drive the British Women’s game forward!

This week the Lions have announced that in less than a month they will be heading to Finland to compete in the inaugural Diamond Bowl – an 11-a-side tournament featuring the top women’s teams from across Europe.

The Tournament will feature Finland’s Helsinki Roosters and Tampere Saints, as well as Russia’s Valkyries Women’s American Football Team.

The Helsinki Roosters, hosts of the tournament, shared the following at HelsinkiRoosters.com:

Diamond Bowl 20.4.2018-22.4.2018 at Helsinki’s Velodrom

Helsinki Roosters hosts the Women’s International American Football Tournament at Helsinki’s Velodrom. In addition to the Roosters Women, who will play in the Diamond Bowl tournament on April 20, 2018-21, 2018, the Birmingham Lions , a British women’s rugby player, Russian St. Petersburg Valkyries and the Women’s Foaming League, will be joining the Tampere Saints team.

The Helsinki Roosters men’s team has had good experience of international games, and the club wants to offer the women’s team the same opportunity. Based on their own experiences, Helsinki Roosters President Jarmo Lahti believes that the tournament will also develop the women’s team forward.

– International matches are part of our program and develop our operations. We organize a tournament because we want our team of women to have the same great experience of international games as the men’s team has. I myself have very nice memories of the tournaments I play with both the young and the men teams, and I definitely want our women’s teams to get the same experience.

Roosters Women’s Head Coach Heli Harjanne sees the tournament as a good opportunity for the team to prepare for the Women’s Foaming League and players.

– The Diamond Bowl is a success for the new gaming system, it is possible to recycle different configurations and enjoy the international gaming experience against the excellent teams in Russia and the UK. At the same time, there is a first-hand experience of playing well-trained Tampere Saints who rise to the Women’s Maple Wing. A tournament-based match event gives players and coaches the opportunity to develop in preparation, adaptation, pressure-sharing, division of responsibilities and grinding.

– I look forward to a dynamic match, a energetic game mistake and a condensation of team spirit from our tournament weekend, and Harjanne sums up his expectations for the tournament.
