The Brunel Burners have emerged as the first BUCS programme to win their conference, after the Burners bested the Surrey Stingers 18-0 on Sunday 27 January, Week Eight of the 18/19 BUCS American Football season.
The win moved the Burners to 6-0, and combined with a loss for the Reading Knights the day before (L 8-14 vs Brighton Panthers) the Burners are now uncatchable atop the 1A South Conference – barring any forfeitures or points reductions.
The Burners are the first team to secure a conference title this season, and indeed a Week Eight crowning is exceptionally rare – there’s still a full third of the BUCS regular season still to play out, but the Burners have locked up their crown with two games in hand and four weeks of University football remaining.
The Burners are the first team to lock up a championship, but a few other programmes are hot on their heels. In Division Two, the Edinburgh Predators and Essex Blades are each just one result away from securing their respective conference titles, and the promotion to middle tier football that comes with it.
