BUCS | Northern Conference Cup final pushed back, South to follow suit?

N.B. Since publishing this article, Brighton have confirmed the Southern Conference Cup Final IS going ahead this Sunday as planned. Notably however, we’re still hearing the Stags believe the game is going to be postponed.

DC has learned the Northern Conference Cup, scheduled to see the top two teams in the northern half of Division Two go head to head this Sunday, has been postponed.

The intended fixture between the Coventry Jets and Newcastle Raiders has currently been postponed, may now not be played until May, due to University holidays and exam periods.

As DC understands it, the Newcastle Raiders requested the postponement due to a large number of players heading home for the Easter holidays, the University’s term coming to a conclusion this Friday.

Further to this, we also hearing there’s a fair chance that the Southern Conference Cup final will similarly be postponed. We’re hearing rumblings that the Southampton Stags have similarly requested a postponement of their Conference Cup Final fixture versus the Brighton Panthers, due to player availability.

Should both these postponements occur, this will obviously cause further frustration for those teams that saw their BUCS postseasons cut short due to the enforcement of tiebreakers.

In particular, the Bangor MudDogs and OBU Panthers, who both saw their fixtures lost to poor weather this past Sunday and subsequently expelled from the postseason on tiebreakers, are likely to feel especially hard-done-by.

BUCS’ decision to not allow these lost fixtures to be played out at a later date, and progression decided on the field of play, now seems especially callous if both Conference Cup Finals end up being delayed anyhow.

Prior to this news, the Bangor MudDogs had launched a change.org petition asking BUCS to reconsider their Regulations. As noted in the petition:

“…this petition DOES NOT seek a reversal of the rulings for this fixture, but instead aims to promote change for future seasons and all sports, and thus requests written confirmation from BUCS that the rules surrounding this type of scenario are considered for revision.”
