#Div1Final | Head Coach Interview – Peter Birds, Manchester Titans

Who are you and what’s your coaching background?

Current Head Coach of the Manchester Titans and also current HC of the University of Manchester Tyrants.

Been involved in the Senior team in Manchester now for three years as mainly the RB coach, dipping into specials and last year stepping into filling the OC role. Given the HC position in September 2016.

Prior to this I was involved in the Youth programme for a season assisting Jon Homer and being the DC for a year.

Alongside the summer season I am now entering my 5th season with the University of Manchester Tyrants. Starting off as RB coach, and seeing out my first season as interim HC, I have since been the HC for three seasons in a row.

How did you get into coaching American Football?

I wanted to know more, learn more, help more. Like so many I ran a couple of drills, helped out where I could and tried to become a sponge. I liked the idea of being able to progress someone try and make them better and it’s just snowballed from there.

Who’s your coaching hero?

Only 1?! Massive fan of Nick Saban at Alabama. Record and longevity is simply startling.

But others include Chuck Noll, Belichick and Bear Bryant.

Outside of Football Clive Woodward and Ian Dyer are two that stand out.

What’s your coaching dream?

Getting as many players to the highest level that they can perform to. Am sure any coach in GB would love to have a Moritz Böhringer type story, would be great to be involved in that.

For myself I don’t know to be honest! A couple of years ago I wanted to get a Manchester team in the Prem, now I suppose the next challenge is to keep the team in the top tier.

What’s the single most important quality for a British American Football coach, in your opinion?

Be able to change your approach! So many different people, different backgrounds different athletic abilities, important to be able to change it up.

And now the quick fire round! Answer as quickly as possible, we trust you to be honest 😉
