An early Christmas present for Uniballers all across the Britball Nation, Football America have shared their intent to revive a long-lost staple of the British University game – the North/South All-Star game!
First hinted at with a logo release last night, the American Football equipment supplier has been working closely with institutions of the British game, along with a number of top Uniball outfits, to revive the All-Star game.
Once a staple of British Student football, the last iteration of the All-Star game was held back in 2008/9, then the ‘BUAFL MVP Programme’ when then-Loughborough-now-Nottingham Head Coach Jason Scott’s Northern side narrowly edged a win over the South. However, when the administration of the University game transferred across to BUCS, the All-Star programme was a casualty of the new format.
Now however, through the tireless efforts of Football America, the All-Star programme will return in 2019, reborn as a superb opportunity for both players and coaches to develop their game.
Per the Football America blog, the proposed game day it set for 20 April 2019 at Harvey Hadden Stadium in Nottingham and will feature 45-man rosters headed up by legendary Uniball coaches Paul Sheratt for the North and Wayne Hill for the south!
Per the current plan, still awaiting final confirmation with BUCS and BAFA, trials are scheduled to take place on 9 February, so prospective ballers better start clearing their Calendars, with team practices on 13 April, the week prior to the game, and following the conclusion of the BUCS season.
Those fearing an All-Star game might end up being overwhelmed by US scholars needn’t worry – to be eligible for a roster all applicants must hold a GB Passport or Citizenship, be currently studying for a Degree or higher qualification at a BUCS Institutions and be registered to one of the current 81 competing BUCS University Teams.
Head Coaches Sherratt and Hill are accepting coaching staff applications through the following link (https://goo.gl/forms/Oif5e5jYPbtvGxh82) and player registrations will go live in the next few days. Head Coaches will select nine staff coaches and a number of GA positions for development purposes. As with players, coaches eligibility is determined by the team coached and their conference, the details of which are available on the Football America Blog post – go check it out!
Hopes are the development of an All Star scheme may be the impetus to see a similar resuscitation of the GB Students Programme.
