Uniball has returned, and we don’t think we could have asked for a more exciting and varied Week One! Blow out wins, paired with nail-biters and even our first overtime fixture of the year! But which teams had the best and worst of it in the opening weekend of fixtures?
- A couple teams surpassed expectations this weekend, as the Swansea Titans stepped forward as frontrunners in the Prem South with a nice win over a Hurricanes side that bested them twice in 2017/18. Similarly, the Reading Knights, who finished last year on a hot streak, got off to a cracking start with a surprise win over last year’s conference champs.
- The first promoted team in action so far this season, the Newcastle Raiders set the standard for all other teams who took a step up in the offseason as they took a narrow win over the Tigers.
- Nothing like starting as you mean to go on… the York Centurions open their year with a win in double overtime! Clearly eager to squeeze as much football as possible into their season!
- And lest we forget the third round of the 2018 Opal Series took place on Saturday, with the strong only looking to get stronger as both undefeated conference leaders kept ahead of the pack. The East Kilbride Pirates took three big wins in the North, while the Coventry Cougars continue to look utterly unstoppable with a combined scoreline of 172-6 from their three wins on Saturday!
The Durham Saints got their title defence off to the strongest possible start with comprehensive victory over their Unibowl rivals from last season!
While the Braves pushed the Saints hard during their showdown at Sixways for the National Championship back in March, the reigning Champions seemed to make short work of Derby this time around.
Surely the standout scoreline from the weekend, not only did we see an oh-so-rare Fifty Burger in the Prem North (there were NONE last year!), but being conceded by the long-time powerhouse that is the Stirling Clansmen!
A statement performance from Leeds Beckett Carnegie in their second season in the top tier.
While we’ve seen bigger scorelines in Uniball, it’s fair to say not very many of them – and especially in Week One when many offences are still trying to find their feet!
The Kent Falcons flew out to a big lead and didn’t so much as allow the Immortals a sniff of the end zone in their 78-0 victory.
It looks like the Falcons haven’t dropped a beat since their undefeated 17/18 regular season.
But which teams had the worst of it in Week One of the new BUCS season?
