Ahead of their appearance at Wembley on Sunday, the Jacksonville Jaguars today hosted the national final of the Jaguars Se7ens Cup, a seven-on-seven flag football competition in which the winning team, Massflag Allstars secured a free trip to Super Bowl LII.
Held immediately after the Jaguars full team practice at Allianz Park, the final was attended by Jaguars legends Tony Boselli, Mark Brunell and Fred Taylor, Jaguars mascot Jaxson de Ville, ROAR of the Jaguars cheerleaders and the Jaguars team Drum line.
On Friday 22nd September, amateur American football teams Massflag Allstars beat the Baker Street Buttonhookers at Allianz Park when they faced off in the final of the Jaguars Se7ens Cup, battling it out for the chance to win a dream trip to Super Bowl LII in Minnesota!
The Se7ens Cup is a seven-on-seven flag American football (non-contact) tournament, which sees teams across the country competing in a knockout format to earn a place in the Final. Now in its second year, the competition has grown considerably since its inception, with nearly 50 teams competing in the heats for their shot at the prize, and the standard of play increasingly considerably from last year’s tournament. In recognition of the growing appetite for American football, this year’s prize is even bigger, giving the winning team a free trip to the Super Bowl, and as the biggest prize in British American Football, the stakes were high.
Massflag Allstars were the winners of this year’s northern heat, which took place at Manchester’s Platt Lane Sports Complex on 2nd September, and joining them in the final were the London based Baker Street Buttonhookers, who won the southern heat at The Hive on 9th September. The competition between the two teams was fierce, with Jaguars legends Tony Boselli, Mark Brunell and Fred Taylor on the sidelines to offer their encouragement and words of wisdom. Mark Brunell gave a pre-game pep talk to Massflag, whilst Boselli and Taylor aligned themselves with the Buttonhookers. To Brunell’s delight it was Massflag Allstars who emerged victorious, securing that free trip to Super Bowl LII for their entire team with a 33-15 win.
The captain of Massflag Allstars, was ecstatic at his team’s win, saying
“We are all absolute buzzing to have won the final and those Super Bowl tickets! We’ve trained hard for it and the Buttonhookers put up a good fight, so we’re just so pumped to have actually won! We’re also so grateful to the Jags for putting together this tournament – we’ve competed in leagues before but nothing with a prize like this!”
Senior VP of International Development, Hussain Naqi, spoke about the final saying,
“We’d like to offer huge congratulations to Massflag Allstars for their victory – it was a tough competition but they showed great skill and determination. We could not be happier about the success of this year’s Jaguars Se7ens Cup competition. The growth of the tournament both in playing standard and team interest is a testament to the increasing popularity of American football in the UK, and we’re thrilled to be helping improve access to the sport for a wide demographic of players. We can’t wait to see everything that the Massflag Allstars get up to on their trip to the Super Bowl, and are already gearing up for next year’s competition.”
