Michael Callan appointed as Head of National Programme

The British American Football Association have announced GB Lions Adult Head Coach, Mike Callan, as the new head of the National Programme.

The move will see Coach Callan take the lead for all six GB Lions squads, though will entail the recruitment of a new GB Lions Adult Head Coach following the culmination of the current competitive schedule with games against Russia later this month, and Sweden in November.

BAFA are delighted to announce the appointment of Michael Callan as our new Head of National Programme

Michael, who’s been head coach of the GB men’s contact team since 2011, has over 18 years of coaching and American football experience in the UK and US.

As well as his GB Men’s Contact team head coaching role, his extensive experience includes stints coaching with Xavier High School in Connecticut, Greenwich University, GB U19, and the London Blitz. Outside of sport Michael is a special education needs teacher and head of year in Wembley, London.

Michael will report to Chief Executive Officer Pete Ackerley and will be responsible for leading BAFA’s National Programme teams, currently comprising U19, women’s and men’s contact teams and women’s and men’s flag teams. His main areas of focus will be setting and implementing strategy and overseeing the operations of the National Programme by managing the team leads and team managers.

Michael will also continue in his current role as GB men’s contact head coach until after the forthcoming pool qualifying games against Russia later this month, and Sweden in November. He will then launch a recruitment process to find a replacement.

“I’m extremely excited about this role and proud to be able to represent all National Programme teams,” commented Michael. “It’s truly an honour that I won’t take lightly. I know it’s a big role, but one that can have huge potential at many levels. I look forward to working with the British American football community and building a strong and great National Programme.”
