POTY – A Closer Look: The Kingston/Cobham Cougars

At a glance:

  • University – Currently undefeated (3-0) atop 1A South
  • Under 19s – Announced Cougars will be joining the Junior leagues for 2018
  • Under 17s – Two teams, including undefeated South Conference Champs (11-0-1) U17 National Champions

Proof Passion can produce exponential growth in Britball

In a BNAs first, we have a very worthy Programme of the Year nominee, without a BAFA Adult team to its name!

The Cougars are proof that a few passionate individuals can have a huge impact on bettering the lives of those around them, as the Coaches at the heart of this programme have worked tirelessly to expand the ways young athletes in their community can access Britball in their local area.

This programme’s achievements and impressive expansion in recent seasons is the product of a close cooperation between Kingston University’s BUCS team, and the Cobham Cougars development programme, based out of ACS International School.

A young programme, still in its infancy, the Cougars have had massive and immediate success in growing participation and spurring player development – as displayed by their year on year expansion:

Two Under17s teams took part in 2017, and with great success as the Veteran ‘Blue’ went one better than 2016, and hoisted a National Championship. Further, the Cougars have announced an expansion into Under 19s football for 2018, and are expected to be contenders right out of the gate!

Spearheaded by a trio of dynamic and innovative coaches – Scott Barlow, Nate Wilson and Conan Jal – the Cougars have displayed their commitment to building their success upon sustainability, their staff not only focused upon upskilling atheletes on the gridiron, but also possess the knowhow and intent to build a ‘complete’ programme, aimed at fully supporting the young ballers they introduce to the sport.

With exceptional coaching and player development routes, and a passion to grow both as a programme, and the sport as a whole, we reckon its only a countdown until we see a Cougars senior team tearing up the tables in the BAFA Adult leagues, too!
