Power Rankings | BUCS 2018/19 Week Five: Premiership

The BUCS season is upon us, and so our Power Rankings return along with your opportunity to have your say on how things stack up across the three tiers of the University game!

We’re collating this year’s rankings via the highly successful format used this past summer – polling not only our own team of BUCS correspondents but also giving all of our passionate Patreon supporters the opportunity to determine how these rankings stack up!

Each contributor submitted their own picks of who’s top dogs in each tier, and then we tallied it all up to create these amalgamated rankings!

If you want your say on who’s top dog in each tier? You can join our Patreon for just $1 a month and directly contribute to the growth of the game, and DC’s survival!

Let’s see who’s climbing the ladder following Week Five:

10. Derby Braves ( = )

They put up some late point on Leeds, and just barely staved off the fifty burger… but the Braves will go into the break winless, hoping for some more firepower in their stockings.

9. Portsmouth Destroyers ( = )

Portsmouth’s defence seemed to hold its own against the Titans, but the reality is the Destroyers haven’t put up a point in three straight fixtures.

They take on the gotten-hot Hertfordshire Hurricanes this weekend, and a further loss will surely lock the Destroyers into the drop spot out of the top tier?

8. Birmingham Lions ( Down Two )

The Lions’ suffered their second loss in a row, and all of a sudden the reigning Prem South champs don’t look near as scary.

It wasn’t so much the fact they lost to the ‘Canes, as the scale of it – we’re still not sure whether the Lions have ever lost a game on that scale.

7. UWE Bullets ( = )

The Bullets have a great chance to establish themselves as contenders in the South as they host a wounded Birmingham Lions outfit this Sunday.

Two teams put on one of the best shows of the season in their first meeting back in Week Two – we’ll be looking for fur to fly in this meeting too! A win surely moves the Bullets into position to potentially contest the Southern title in their first year in the tier.

6. Hertfordshire Hurricanes ( Up Two )

The ‘Canes blew away Birmingham in Week Five, and so swipe away the Lions’ spot in the rankings! They host their third home game of the year when they welcome the Destroyers on Sunday. A victory will begin to move them back into the race for the top of the table.

5. Stirling Clansmen ( = )

The Clan came up just short against Nottingham, a late touchdown the only difference maker as Stirling’s suddenly impressive defence continues to keep them in contention.

They’ll look to this Sunday as an opportunity to prove they’re the real deal, as they take on a Carnegie side that burgered them back in Week One.

A similarly stingy defensive performance in this one and the Clan will have proven they’re capable of competing against all-comers and just need a little more spark on offence to be viewed as championship contenders once again!

4. Leeds Beckett Carnegie ( = )

Carnegie made short work of the Braves in Week Five, but it’s not enough to see them enter the top three just yet.

They travel north of the wall to take on the Clan this Sunday, hoping for a repeat of their impressive Week One win.

2. Swansea Titans ( Down One )

A rather modest win from the Titans sees them slide down a spot. Still, they go into the break undefeated atop the Premiership South and have shown few weaknesses up to this point in the season.

They’ll return in February to face the Hurricanes, who they outpaced back in Week One.

2. Durham Saints ( Up One )

The shock of their loss to Stirling behind them, the Saints climb back up into the #2 spot in our rankings.

They face their most crucial matchup of the season as they host the currently undefeated Nottingham on Sunday – a win will almost certainly reclaim their traditional place atop the rankings, and the Prem North table…

1. University of Nottingham ( = )

…While a loss for the Saints would lock Notts into the top spot right through the Christmas break, and more than prove the Green and Gold’s fast start in the top tier has been no fluke!

Whichever way this crucial showdown swings, the two teams will meet one another once again right out of the Christmas break – look for sparks to fly in both clashes and two cunning coaching staffs and talented rosters attempt to outwit, outpace and out-muscle one another!
