Power Rankings | BUCS 2018/19 Week One Power Rankings: Premiership

The BUCS season is upon us, and so our Power Rankings return along with your opportunity to have your say on how things stack up across the three tiers of the University game!

We’re collating this year’s rankings via the highly successful format used this past summer – polling not only our own team of BUCS correspondents but also giving all of our passionate Patreon supporters the opportunity to determine how these rankings stack up!

Each contributor submitted their own picks of who’s top dogs in each tier, and then we tallied it all up to create these amalgamated rankings!

If you want your say on who’s top dog in each tier? You can join our Patreon for just $1 a month and directly contribute to the growth of the game, and DC’s survival!

If you missed our preseason Power Rankings (that were released a little late) you can go check them out to see just how far off the mark our pollsters were coming into the year!

10. Portsmouth Destroyers ( = )

Despite pushing last year’s conference champions close in Week One, the Destroyers aren’t able to climb off the bottom rung of the rankings just yet.

They host their second game this weekend, facing off on Saturday against a Titans side that got off to a fast start against the Hurricanes last weekend.

9. UWE Bullets (Down One)

The Bullets kick off their season this weekend against the 2017/18 Prem South Champs, the Birmingham Lions.

It’ll be our first chance to see the Bullets’ scholars in action – and a win would surely see them fire up the ranks!

8. Derby Braves (Down Five)

A big loss for the Braves saw them tumble right down the rankings – and to add insult to injury we still don’t have the right helmet design for them either!

Yes, despite running the Saints fairly close in their three meetings between the two teams last year, Derby simply didn’t seem to have an answer for Durham in their season-opening rematch of the Unibowl Final.

They won’t have long to rethink their game plan, as they face the Saints once again in Week Three!

7. Stirling Clansmen (Down Five)

Stirling slide all the way down to seventh following their shock Week One loss to Leeds.

It wasn’t so much that they lost, but rather the scale of it that sees the Scotsmen slide so far down the rankings. We didn’t a single 50 Burger in the Prem North throughout the entirety of last season, and suddenly the traditional powerhouse of the North are giving one up in Week One?!?

They have a couple of weeks to lick their wounds before taking on the Saints in Week Four.

6. Hertfordshire Hurricanes (Down Two)

The Hurricanes couldn’t keep pace with the Titans on opening weekend, so slide into the lower half of the rankings.

It’ll be a blow to their confidence having bested Swansea in both meetings last year – are we seeing a new team-to-beat emerge in the south?

They’ll look to improve when they face the Bullets in Week Three.

5. University of Nottingham (Up One)

Losses elsewhere see the newboys in the North climb into the top half of the rankings without so much as a game to their name!

They kick off their Premiership tenure this weekend, notably taking on the last team to have beaten them – Carnegie edging a win in a climactic postseason battle back in 2016/17.

It was one of the greatest games in Uniball history, hence why these two reuniting is our Premiership Game of the Week for Week Two!

4. Birmingham Lions ( = )

In spite of a wealth of changes during the offseason, the Lions went down to Portsmouth and won their first fixture for the new coaching regime – the three point victory ensuring they hold onto the #4 spot in the rankings.

They’re right back in action this weekend, as they host the UWE Bullets in the Bristol teams’ Premiership debut.

3. Swansea Titans (Up Six)

The Titans rocket up the rankings after their convincing win over the Hurricanes in Week One.

They travel to Portsmouth on Saturday, and another confident win could well lock them in as the early-season team-to-beat in the south!

2. Leeds Beckett Carnegie (Up Five)

Carnegie win… and with gusto as they open their campaign by posting up fifty points on the Clansmen!

The big win boosts them up to the second spot in the rankings, and they’ll look to prove it wasn’t a fluke when they travel down to newboys, Nottingham, this weekend.

The last time these two met, two seasons ago, was an absolute banger and so we’ll be taking a closer look at their fixture this weekend in our new Game of the Week series.

1. Durham Saints ( = )

And with a unanimous verdict from across all our pollsters, the Durham Saints’ confident Week One win over the Braves locks them into the top spot in the rankings!

Derby will need to change things up sharpish, as the two teams meet again in Week Three and another big win for the Saints could make it very difficult to shift them from the top of the rankings any time soon!
