Rumours abound: Durham Saints QB1 Drug Scandal?

The Durham Saints, currently sitting at 6-0 atop the Premier North, may have been dealt a blow to their aspirations of a College Bowl, as news has emerged of the possible suspension of starting quarterback Dominic Bona.

A number of sources across the #BritballNation contacted DC about Bona’s possible suspension, though we are yet to see anything confirmed by BAFA, BUCS, or the Saints themselves.

Bona was banned this past summer by the American Football Association of Finland following a positive doping sample in May.

The former NCAA Division III college quarterback was suspended whilst playing for the Tampere Saints in the Vaahtera Liiga (Maple League), the top tier of football in Finland, and had his contract terminated with immediate effect.

Since that time Bona has been the starting quarterback for the Saints during their unbeaten run, although he didn’t play in their 27-12 victory over the Derby Braves this past weekend. The reason for his absence, suspension or otherwise, is yet to be confirmed.

We contacted the Saints but so far have only received the following in response:

“For all enquiries please contact the Durham University Communications Team on +44 (0)191 334 6075 or communications.team@durham.ac.uk.”

We will of course keep the ‘Nation up to date with anything further we learn.

Gareth has played for the Birmingham Bulls and Sandwell Steelers, and as a frustrated offensive play-maker craves only the sweet rush that comes with interceptions. He joined Double Coverage at the request of Rob Amor and is only here until he's picked up by ESPN.
