The Sapphire Series kicked off last weekend, and there were stand out performances both on and off the field from across the breadth of the four conferences. Women’s Football Consultant Editor, Luke Plastow, and the #TeamDC Women’s team picked the stand outs among standouts from each of the four tournaments as the Sapphire Round One Ballers of the Week!
Division One North
The second year Leeds RB hit Sapphire running on Saturday. (See what we did there?) With the largest OL in the competition opening running lanes Gaby broke tackles or out paced defenders in both of Leeds’ one sided victories. 260 yards on the day with 4 scores against Edinburgh and 3 against Manchester, Gaby was an easy choice for the Division One North Baller of the Week.
Division One South
After appearing on BBC Breakfast Saturday morning she rushed to Birmingham for her home tournament with the Lions. She put in a solid performance against Hertfordshire claiming at INT ending the Tornadoes hail mary attempt as the first half expired. This fueled her hunger for turnovers and she followed this with five pick sixes and a fumble recovery also taken to the house. Seven turnovers, six taken in for scores makes you our Division One South Baller of the Week.
Division Two North & West
One of the things that makes Women’s football a positive experience is the sense of community and friendship between teams and players. This was shown on Saturday in Oldbury when Teesside RB Laura Hegarty was taken to hospital leaving the tournament without sufficient medical cover. Sacrificing her own game time to enable everyone else to continue playing, Vikki changed out of her game uniform and stepped up as the medical cover needed to finish the tournament. Not all heroes wear capes and Vikki is our Div Two North & West Baller of the Week.
Division Two South & East
The Portsmouth QB was integral to both victories Saturday distributing the ball like a seasoned pro. The go ahead score against Wembley was the result of a pinpoint pass and a superb diving catch in the endzone by Jess Edgcombe. This was followed by a steely performance against Oxford finding Steph Wyant and Edgcombe once more for scores. Leading a dominating pass attack to the top of the conference makes Ilona Division Two South & East baller of the week.
