With another quick turnaround between tournaments, and the frigid weather likely to scupper the travel plans of anyone headed to mid-week training it raises the question – how will this tournament be different to the last few?
Division 1A South Tournament Four Preview
By Claudie Allan
Birmingham remain undefeated, even after the cross-conference faceoffs last weekend and will be looking to remain that way. The Lions have been almost untouchable all season, having scored a massive 269 points over the six games they’ve played. They’ll start this weekend (Beast from the East permitting) against home side, London, who will not want to start the tournament on a loss for the second time in two weeks.
The last time they faced each other the outcome was a game that wasn’t necessarily tight, but was at least enjoyable to watch. Ultimately, the Warriors will be looking to avoid the home loss, but against a behemoth like Birmingham, the real goal is just to keep them off the scoreboard as much as possible.
Hertfordshire will also get a turn against the Lions and will be hoping to get a bit of payback after their last meeting. If they beat Derby, and London lose to both Birmingham and Derby, there is a chance they could leap-frog their local rivals and go into the National Finals in a solid second place.
Derby Braves have been keeping the bottom of the table warm all season, and now with only one ‘regular’ tournament left, they’re running out of time to make any real change. That being said, they are going into Round Four buoyed by their storming success against the winners of this year’s #BNAs2017 Programme of the Year, Manchester Titans. With that sort of confidence behind them, we could see them pull some very respectable scores out of the bag.
Given that the weather is due to be unpleasant at best, teams will be battling not only each other, but also the elements. If we don’t see a significant temperature rise over the next few days, we are likely to be seeing a lot of injuries; the ground will be hard, muscles will be cold, extremities will be numb, and tensions will be high. Coaches will be fighting to keep their players warm and focused on the game rather than the gnawing cold nibbling away at their toes.
