This Saturday reunites the North Conference for some tasty rematches and with the Teesside Steelers back to full strength it should be another competitive day out for the Northern teams!

The scores on the board at the moment put the Sandwell Steelers as leaders of the North (just about) having won both their games in round two and caught up to the Chester Romans.  However, with this pair ending their last meeting in a tie, the Conference could be anyone’s at this point!

Sandwell Steelers

Sandwell looked strong coming out of the last round with two solid wins and have managed to edge their way back in as potential Division contenders despite being bottom of the North before last week. Sandwell’s defensive unit has been fairly consistent for the last couple of years now. Notably this season their defence has scored points in every game so far which is pretty outstanding.

However what has changed the game for the Steelers this season is the edge their offence is demonstrating. With an all-new 7’s playbook and offensive coordinator, Jay Alexander, taking the reins the Steelers offence are looking better than ever. It’s certainly great to see the massive potential of this team unfolding and we reckon they could take it all the way this year.

Chester Romans

Chester had a bit of a tough day at the office in round two suffering a heavy loss to the current division leaders the Portsmouth Dreadnoughts. They did take the win away from the Cardiff Valkyries, however, this game was a lot closer than anticipated with less than a score between them.

We should, however, mention that their defence in the game against Cardiff put up a total of FIVE safeties which definitely ensured the Romans the much-needed win. Chester’s defence, much like rivals Sandwell have also put up points in every game so far this season!

The Romans did also take a hit in round two losing both their running backs Jo Craze and Helena Lasok-Smith to injury in the Cardiff game. Jo is looking to be out this round with an ankle sprain and the jury is still out on Helena… Let’s hope they’re back to full health soon!

Teesside Steelers

Last but by no means least is this rounds home team Teesside. Teesside, unfortunately, had to withdraw from the last round taking two automatic losses for the standings which now leaves them bottom of the North. However, the Steelers are excited to be back this round and are determined to bring home two wins this weekend. (Clearly, as they were still training in over six inches of snow last night!)

Despite Teesside missing out on valuable game experience, they do have the advantage of a well-rested team for this round. Whereas we suspect Chester and Sandwell will definitely be feeling the strain with only a week to recover since the last games.

Last time these teams faced each other, it was seriously competitive, each game ending within just one score. The game to watch this weekend however will be the Chester vs Sandwell rematch. After ending their last game in regulation time at a tie, we expect both teams will be out to prove they mean business on Saturday.
