Saxons to Join Steelers Ahead Of Sapphire 2019

With announcements on the formats and structure for the Women’s Full Contact National Championship Series expected shortly, the Staffordshire Saxons and Sandwell Steelers have issued a joint statement that the two teams will be participating under the Steelers’ banner this coming spring.

The move follows the Sapphire Series moving fully to a 7 v 7 format for 2019, as opposed to the 5 v 5 format in which the Saxons competed last year in their first year participating series.

The teams shared:

“With the Sapphire Series moving to a wholly 7 v 7 format for 2018/19, the Staffordshire Saxons will not be entering a team as they focus on contact development for next year.

The Saxons existing players will instead be joining the Sandwell Steelers as the Steelers compete during the upcoming Sapphire Series. Sandwell are looking forward to welcoming the new players on board and strengthening their squad for the season ahead.

The Saxons will continue to play flag and compete in the Opal Series, but look forward to supporting their football sisters, the Steelers, during this year’s Sapphire.”
