Hot off achieving their first league victory against the South East Legion at the weekend, the Thames Valley Tigers have announced the team’s successful bid for Sport England funding that has allowed the team to purchase a full new set of swag for the fledgling development programme!
Per the Thames Valley Tigers’ Facebook page:
A local Under 19 American Football team has just landed the funds to buy thousands of pounds worth of new equipment.
Thames Valley Tigers, formed in partnership between Swindon Storm and Berkshire Renegades American Football clubs, has just taken delivery of a complete new set of kit, thanks to generous sponsorship from a local company, and a large grant awarded by Sport England. It has enabled them to buy new helmets, shoulder pads, custom jerseys, other playing kit and training equipment.
“It can cost £350 to kit out one player for a game” said team Head Coach, Adrian Mees.
“We had to play our first season in mismatched, borrowed kit, but this makes a whole lot of difference to the players, and to the confidence of the team as a whole”, he said.
The team applied for the grant earlier this year, and were extremely pleased to be awarded £10,000. Sport England say that they are keen to support sports that are aimed at the 16-19 year age group, given there is currently a problem with a marked drop-off in physical activity at 16, as young people complete GCSEs, and no longer have compulsory PE lessons.
They are also keen that the sport is very inclusive for people of differing physiques and abilities. Kev Metcalfe, CEO of Verelogic Recruitment in Swindon, whose Son Dylan plays for the team, also kindly contributed with sponsorship. Kev said
“We have seen a huge growth in American Football in the UK, and we are very proud to support Adrian and the TVT, and look forward to seeing them grow”.
The team are actively recruiting, and have just started their season. They played 12th May vs South East Legion, at Maidstone, winning 22-8, and have a home game, at Supermarine Club in Swindon, on June 2nd, vs Cambridge Cats. This should be quite an event, as the Swindon Storm Senior team also play that day, vs Jurassic Coast Raptors.
Entry is free, so come on down from midday, to see some American Football action!
