Dearest Britball Nation,
As we’ve stated on numerous occasions, Double Coverage recognises the value and importance of the developmental facets of the British game.
The Under 17 and Under 19 formats of the game are, quite literally, the future of the British game.
As such, as part of our ongoing quest to expand and enhance our coverage of domestic football to eventually encompass all Britball, everywhere, ahead of this summer we put together a new team of dedicated writers, focused purely upon increasing the amount of exposure we can give the young ‘ballers that are the foundation of the Britball Nation.
Of course, as all of us are likely aware, the erstwhile Youth and Junior games are currently in a state of flux – as programmes across the breadth of the British American Football Community struggle with the unique requirements of developing a successful and sustainable team made up of teenagers and young adults.
There have been some great success stories that we’ve reported on in recent months, but as we approached the season kick off itself, it became more and more apparent that a good number of programmes – some long-time staples of the game – would struggle to field competitive teams this season.
This has led to the situation we currently find ourselves in, where due to the difficult situation many clubs are experiencing, we reach the eve of the U17 and U19 seasons kicking off and we’re still without confirmed alignments or schedules for the full contact Under 17 and Under 19 competitions… which in turn has obviously made it rather difficult for our team to get cracking with the coverage we have planned for this season!
As such, our apologies to the teams that will open their U17/U19 campaigns this weekend, we wish you the best of luck in the games themselves, and in future weeks this year we have the following planned:
Similarly to the coverage of the Women’s game, which we began to ramp up this past Sapphire series;
- Previews for each conference, looking at upcoming fixtures/tournaments and highlighting the progress of the young teams as the season progresses
- Reviews following each Saturday’s slate of fixtures
- Full results and tables hosted on the site
- The option for teams to submit highlights, to be compiled into their own U17 or U19 highlight round up each week and shared on our YouTube channel, much as we’ll be doing with the Adult league games
- And potentially some even more exciting news as we approach the end of the season… but we’ll save that for later in the year!
We look forward to sharing full coverage of this essential aspect of the game with you as soon as we’re able.
Also of note, we’re aware many of our Uniball followers are eagerly awaiting the announcement of the 16/17 Uniball ‘All-DC’ team, as promised during the season.
This year we went a step further to ensure our All-DC selections were based upon the best information possible, and so throughout this season we collected nominations from Head Coaches of each University side that chose to participate.
These nominations consisted of a mandatory three opponent nominations, alongside up to three nominations of players from the coaches own team. This means, all in all, we have something in the region of ~200 form submissions to work our way through and contact teams to determine identities of ballers who perhaps were only identified by either number, or potentially only position.
This, combined with the fact that there was such a short period of time between Uniball ending and the Adult season getting underway, has meant that while we’ve been working on the All-DC rosters, it’s taking some time to work through properly. We have a large staff of volunteers here at DC, but as we’ve found in recent years it’s realistically too big a task to thrust upon a single volunteer, and too complicated to expect a team to work through when only able to coordinate online. And even with DC as my full-time vocation, we currently produce so much daily Britball content, even I struggle to keep plowing through the 200+ nomination forms!
University teams presidents should expect to be contacted shortly with a list of identification requests, with our final All-DC rosters announced shortly after!
With three rosters representing all three tiers of the game, this should be the most comprehensive All-DC team to date! …once it’s finally good to go.
We know there’s likely other queries that the Nation has about DC and our content, and so while we’ll look to make statements such as these a more regular occurrence, also note that you can always get in touch with us with any queries via our Facebook page, or leave a question in the comments down below and maybe we’ll put together a little Q&A piece in the not-so-distant future!
