With only one game this weekend, it’s a battle of two new teams to the league.
Thames Valley Tigers vs Sussex Thunder
By Ryan Duff
Two unknown quantities battled it out to start their seasons, as Sussex Thunder shut out the Thames Valley Tigers 19-0 in a Defense-dominated game, which was perhaps closer than the scoreline would suggest.
In a game saturated with flags, the First Quarter was a scoreless affair, with both Defenses holding strong until Sussex Running Back Isaac Dibi-Fofana broke free on a long run, giving the Thunder a 6-0 lead shortly before halftime. Into the Fourth Quarter, Dibi-Fofana grabbed his second touchdown of the game, with Ombaashi Grech-Cato running in one of his own, giving Sussex an impressive 19-0 scoreline.
Outside of these big scoring plays, however, the Thames Valley Defense seemed suffocating, consistently getting pressure deep in the Sussex backfield and driving the offence backwards. With their heavy-blitzing scheme, Thames Valley did not give up a first down all game, with the exception of the all-important scoring plays, and looked dominant at the line of scrimmage.
Thames Valley’s Offense too put up an admirable fight, with Defensive End and stand-in QB Lewis Mees stringing together several sustained drives. The Offense, however, ultimately failed to find the Endzone, and both Sussex DBs Charlie Dunne and Joe Davies got their hands on some errant deep passes to give possession back to the Sussex Offense.
After a solid introduction to the U19 game, both teams will see action this weekend as Thames Valley travel to Solent, whilst Sussex Thunder face the defending Britbowl champions, the London Blitz.
