UWSU Dragons To Withdraw from 2017/18 BUCS Season

Despite being included in this year’s BUCS schedule and structure for the upcoming season, reportedly against the preferences of the British American Football Association who were hoping to avoid such situations by enforcing more rigorous standards this offseason, the Westminster University Dragons have announced they will not be able to field a squad this BUCS season.

In a statement from the club shared with DblCoverage.com:

“Westminster Dragons will not be fielding an American Football team in 2017.

We have not played a game since 2015. After several players graduated and our Head Coach moved away, we have been unable pull together a coaching staff. There is currently no team.┬áIf there is a coach that is interested in setting up a team, they should get in contact directly with the Westminster SU.”

Perhaps in preparation for just such an eventuality, ahead of this season the Dragons were shifted sideways into the 2A South, initially an eight-team conference compared to the seven-team 2A South West and five team 2A South East.

Expectations are we’ll see the remaining 2A South’s teams’ schedules reduced to six fixtures in line with the 2A South West.
