Where’s our [insert content here]? – A word from the Editor

Dearest Britball Nation,

We’ve had a lot of queries since the opening of the Uniball season about certain formats of content that are currently missing from our weekly schedule.

“Where’s The Scoop? I thought that was coming back?

Where are Power Rankings? It’s nearly Week Five!

What’s happened to all the video content? We want more streamed games!”

And you’re right to ask!

This sport deserves more content, more coverage, and I want Double Coverage to be in a position whereby we can provide it.

You guys deserve an explanation:

Since taking on DC as a full time operation, just over one year ago, we’ve massively increased the quantity, and I’d like to the think, the quality of the content we produce. We’ve gone from struggling to get out 3-5 articles per week, to typically aiming to share or produce 3-5 pieces of content each and every week day, with full as-live-as-we-can-manage score updates every Sunday.

This has only been possible thanks the vast crowd of ballers that contribute to DC, but also the fact that there’s by having the site as my full time vocation? Day in, day out, talking about and growing British American Football is my priority.

It’s been an experience I’ve really enjoyed – a rewarding, eye opening fifteen months full of unique opportunities I would never have otherwise had a shot at.

But at the same time? I got bills to pay.

While running a website itself amounts to only a few hundred pounds a year, there’s a lot more going on on top of that. Getting #TeamDC guys out to events, purchasing necessary equipment to create content from said events, paying partners for their services, etc? It all racks up…

And then I’ve got kitties to feed and a mortgage to pay, all while not taking a salary since last August.

As such, I’ve had to scale back my personal time investment in the site somewhat, and spend a portion of my time on activities that… well, essentially, will keep the lights on.

It’s a frustrating situation, and ultimately it’s on me to figure out a solution.

While I never thought Britball content would be a route to internet millionairedom, I do believe there should be a way to make it a sustainable enterprise, and provide the sport with the presence and outreach it deserves… And NEEDS, if we’re ever going to see it grow beyond the niche activity it currently is.

Instead, the present reality is that DC, in its daily format, will do well to make it all the way through the 17/18 University season.

So, what’s the plan?

Well, initially my thoughts here were just to explain the situation and apologise.

That’s the way the cookie crumbles sometimes and hopefully the sport won’t take too much of a step backwards without us, if we’re not able to figure something out in the interim.

I’ll admit, I’m much more a writer/editor/organiser than a true ‘entrepreneur’/businessman, and there’s been a LOT of shortcomings on my part in figuring out ways to monetise DC and its content and thus make it a sustainable enterprise.

However:

I won’t go into the specifics, but there was some tragic news in the community today, that for a multitude of reasons really hit home with me.

Gee, I thought, as a community, we really should be talking about that kinda stuff more.

If only there was an organisation that had the time and resources to explore some of the deeper issues around the game we love, and had the reach to start some meaningful discussions, bring some light to issues too often kept in the dark?

If only.

Oh wait!

______________

So, look. I don’t know how yet, and that’s gonna take some figuring out… But I’m gonna do my best to get DC, and its content back on track, and more importantly, sustainable.

Power Rankings will return, most likely in a midseason edition ahead of the Christmas break, and then ideally sustained throughout the latter weeks of the season, alongside some other old favourites, including ‘If the season ended today’ amongst others.

The Britball Nation Awards will also return for 2017, categories for nominations to be announced shortly, along with a call for sponsors/partners who want to help reward those teams and individuals across the Britball Nation who’ve stood out during 2017.

I’m gonna figure out a way to get DC out there, to the programmes and the people at the heart of the sport, more often, and create video and written content that shares your stories.

While they’ve seemed less achievable of late, my list of goals for community content and news hasn’t gotten any shorter.

Weekly interviews, weekly streams, All Star Rosters and more importantly All Star games – they’re all things the sport deserves, and all things that we can achieve… I’ve just gotta figure out how.

And I hope you’ll all come along with me as I work on it?
